ACOUSTIC PHENOMENOLOGY - Bill Fontana

ACOUSTIC PHENOMENOLOGY
The Hidden Architecture of the Sounds of Venice
workshop by Bill Fontana

'It is not the voice that commands the story; it is the ear.' Italo Calvino — Invisible Cities

The two day long workshop led by Bill Fontana, one of the world's leading artists known for his pioneering work with sound, is the conclusion of PRIMAL SONIC VISIONS, Collateral Event of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

Promoted by IRENA (The International Renewable Energy Agency) and organized by Science Gallery Venice, the workshop will reveal to students and researchers the art of listening by recording the hidden acoustic phenomena in the natural environment as well as structures of Venice.

From the bridges over the Grand Canal to the waters of the Venice Lagoon, Bill Fontana will teach participants how to reveal and record the hidden architecture of sound in the world around us. Sound will be explored and recorded using hybrid listening technologies of accelerometers, hydrophones as well as microphones.

Participants will go to recording sites and install an array of multiple listening instruments to reveal and record the complex living sound patterns in these situations. When the recordings are setup, participants will be able to collectively listen through a multiple headphone amp to the in-progress recording. Returning to Ca' Foscari University of Venice participants will then listen to the recordings outside of their original context and discuss what we discovered and what it means as a potential Musical/Sonic Language.
