ELEMENTS - photographic contest

Inspired by the Science Gallery Dublin exhibition held in 2011, the international year of chemistry, Science Gallery Venice celebrates with ELEMENTS the 150th year since the creation of the periodic table of elements. The anniversary is an opportunity for the Ca' Foscari University  of Venice to tell the general public and schools of all levels, with workshops and labs, what chemical elements are, when and how they were discovered and what use can be made of them. And it is precisely the use by man that constitutes the focus of ELEMENTS, on the one hand the elements are necessary for our everyday lives and for our health, on the other hand they can have a devastating impact on the planet and humanity as a whole.
Chemical elements play a fundamental role in our lives and their presence is constant and daily. They allow us, to give just a few examples, to drink water without contaminants, to use mobile phones, PCs and cars and to have fruit and vegetables on the table every day thanks to the fertilizers used in agriculture.
Some elements, however, are now at the center of geopolitical conflicts, capable of exterminating man, linked to power and used in the past in the first and second world wars. In particular, four of the most controversial and dangerous elements that will determine who will be the master of the world in the future will come under the spotlight: chlorine, phosphorus, cadmium and cobalt.
The exhibition aims to tell how there are no good or bad chemical elements in themselves, but rather it is the use chosen by the human being that makes the difference.
At the same time as the exhibition, Science Gallery Venice holds a photo contest open to students from Ca' Foscari University of Venice, IUAV University in Venice, the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and the Salesian University Institute in Venice (IUSVE). Those images that best interpret and synthesize the theme of the exhibition will be selected, choosing one of the four elements listed or, alternatively, another element of the periodic table of your choice.
The selected works will be on display throughout the exhibition:
