In Spring 2009, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice created a large group of students forming the first Venetian experience of "cultural mediators". The initiative was successful to the point that some prestigious cultural institutions required the presence of cultural mediators for the forthcoming events.
Mediators are an essential part of the Science Gallery model and a unique part of the programme delivery. They play a crucial role in engaging visitors. In Science Gallery Venice students are trained in science communication by the programming team and engage Science Gallery visitors in debates about the exhibits. This conversational atmosphere creates a ‘depth on demand’ experience for visitors who may wish to delve deeply into the scientific content of exhibits. Mediator positions are highly sought after by university students due to the skill-set and upward networking they are exposed to during this job.
